density series
With clarity and reason, one often desires to see beauty in harmony,
yet for many of us, the untamed emotions remain as an obstacle.
In this body of work, I hope to express this complex dilemma through
lines, spaces, and layers of colors. My compositions are highly minimal,
structured in the tradition of geometric abstraction. But the lines are
never quite straight – they do not speak of absolute truth; they are
organic and constantly changing. The spaces are various color fields.
As a sense of monochromatic harmony sits in the forefront, presences
of individual color fields underneath soon shift one’s perception.
Layers of paint build up a “personal” history, they also establish
different relationships among the colors. Often, one’s history is private,
thus the expression embodies a meditative and internal process,
manifested in various depths, densities, and opacities. This internal
process is continually interrupted by an external force – expressed as
an unexpected horizontal line, a contrasting color field, or a blurred edge.
As one shifts from an internal abyss to an external surface, examining
across the painted canvas, the homogeneous brush strokes once again
bring back a sense of unity and harmony.
As I explore a color field’s layered history leading to its relationships
with others, I hope to express harmony and discord – often created
by our internal and external dialogues.
